Get Sun Savvy

Did you know that the sun’s UV rays hold both beneficial and damaging properties to the human body?

The Pros: UV rays trigger the formation of Vitamin D in our bodies and are also used as a treatment for skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and jaundice.

The Cons: Overexposure to UV rays’ (specifically UVA’s and UVB’s) can greatly increases one’s risk for developing skin cancer such as melanoma. UV radiation is also damaging to the eyes - potentially contributing to blurred vision, temporary blindness and even cataracts.

UV Safety Facts

Here are the facts on common sun exposure myths:

• You can get a sunburn on cloudy days. UV rays pass through clouds.

• Tanning beds are not safer than the sun when it comes to UV ray exposure.

• SPF 30 or higher needs to be reapplied as often as SPF 15.

• UVA rays can penetrate glass so practice sun safety during long car trips.
